Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

What is the reference for the following du’a?

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5053)

Sayyidah Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reported:

“When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would leave my house, he would look towards the sky and recite:

Allahumma inni a’udhi bika an adilla aw udalla aw azilla aw uzalla aw azlima aw uzlama aw ajhala aw yujhala ‘alayya

Translation: O Allah! I seek Your refuge from misguiding [others] or being misguided, slipping or being made to slip [i.e. falling in to sin], oppressing or being oppressed and acting ignorantly or being treated ignorantly.

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded the narration with variation in the wording has declared the Hadith authentic (hasanun sahih).

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3427)
