Can contact with ex-wife post-talaq be maintained for son’s well-being and maintenance payments?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I had divorced my wife. As far as I know, once I had divorced my wife, my wife became “ghair mahram” for me. And keeping any type of contact with her is “haram” for me. I also have one son out of the wedlock, which is at present with the mother. Now my question is that whether I can talk and keep contact with my wife to know about the well being and other requirement of my son. I am sending the maintenance amount for her and our son. This is also a type of contact with her. Whether keeping any type of contact with the wife after the pronouncement of talaq is valid. Please answer in the light of the Quran, Sunnah and Hadith.

(Fatwa: 1424/L-477/TL=11/1434)

If you have given one talaq to your wife and her iddah is also over but you did not take her back then she became stranger after the iddah. Now if you talk her without need then it shall be similar to talking any strange girl which is unlawful. Hence you should not talk your divorced wife in order to enquire the welfare of your children. Rather talk to the male members of her house. As far as the matter of sending the expenses of the child and his mother is concerned then if you are sending her expenses without her demand then there is no harm as it does not involve uncovering (bepardagi) and you do not need to talk to her. It is a kindness and it is not harmful as per the Shariah.
