Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Eat, drink and give sadaqah but abstain from wastefulness and pride.”
Answer
Imams Nasai and Ibn Majah (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has also cited the narration ta’liqan (without a full chain).
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Eat, drink, give charity and wear clothing as long as it is not mixed with extravagance or arrogance.”
(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 2559 with slight variation in the wording and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3605. Also see: Sahih Bukhari, before Hadith: 5783)
‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators reliable. (ورواته إلى عمرو ثقات يحتج بهم في الصحيح)
(Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 142)
‘Allamah Munawi (rahimahullah) explains: “This is a comprehensive Hadith on how a person should be managing his affairs. Extravagance/wastage affects a person’s body and livelihood. Arrogance affects a person as it creates vanity. In this world, arrogance will cause people to hate a person and will be a cause of sin in the Hereafter.”
(Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 6402)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
