What is the explanation of the following statement in Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Haj:
فقال عثمان لعلي كلمة
Answer
Sayyiduna ‘Uthman and Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) had a difference of opinion on an issue regarding Hajj.
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1223)
The literal translation of the statement in question is ‘Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radiyallahu ‘anhu) uttered some words to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) to illustrate his disagreement. This is clear from the narration that follows in Sahih Muslim.
