An unreliable virtue of replying to the adhan

What is the authenticity of the following Hadith?

يا معشر النساء إذا سمعتن أذان هذا الحبشي وإقامته فقلن كما يقول، فإن لكن بكل حرف ألف ألف درجة فقال عمر: هذا للنساء فما للرجال؟ قال: ضعفان يا عمر

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyidah Maymunah (radiyallahu ‘anha). However, ‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared the text of the Hadith unreliable (fihi nakarah).

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 28, vol. 24)

The Hadith should not be quoted.

Translation

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)  said: “O women, when you hear the adhan of [Bilal radiyallahu ‘anhu] and his iqamah, then say just as he said, for verily for each letter, you will be elevated one million stages”. So Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said : “This is for the women, what about the men”? Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said the men will get double this O ‘Umar.”

There are other authentic virtues of replying to the adhan which apply to both genders equally. These should be quoted instead. See here

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
