The lasting effects of Ramadan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the authenticity of the following?

مَنْ سَلِمَ لَه رَمَضَانُ سَلِمَتْ لَه السَّنَةُ

Answer

Translation:

That person whose Ramadan is safe (free from sin) will have his entire year the same.

Imams Bayhaqi, Abu Nu’aym and others (rahimahumullah) have recorded a Hadith with the following words:

‘When the Friday  is safe (free from sin) one will find the rest of the week the same, and when Ramadan is safe (free from sin) the entire year will be safe.’

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 3434 and 3435)

The chains for this Hadith are baseless as stated by Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) himself, as well as other Muhaddithun.

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 3434 & 3435, Sharhul Ihya, vol.3 pg.217 & vol.5 pg. 207, Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 685)

Although these exact words may not be quoted as a Hadith, the meaning is definitely supported by the following authentic (sahih) Hadith as pointed out by Hafiz Ibn ‘Arraq (rahimahullah).

(Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol.2 pg.156. Also see Faydul Qadir, 685)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘The five daily salahs, one Friday to the next and one Ramadan to the other will be a means of expiating one’s [minor] sins as long as the major sins are avoided.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 551)

This Hadith explains that if one abstains from the major sins, the blessings of Ramadan (as well as the other occasions mentioned therein) will last till the next Ramadan…

In light of the above, one should always endeavour to keep Ramadan as spiritual as possible. This will have lasting effects insha Allah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
