The name Hanzalah

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by

I have heard that the name Hanzalah was the name of nearly twenty Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum). I would like to find out who are those Sahabah and more about them?

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has enlisted seventeen Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) with these names.

You may refer to the reference below for their details.

(Al-Isabah, numbers; 1859-1874 and no. 1919)

It should be noted that this is not a restrictive number. Rather it is merely the number of a fraction of the Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) with this name, as is the case with all the names in the books on the biographies of Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum).

Like the name Hanzalah, there are numerous other names of the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) – male and female – that were common in that era but rare in ours. Prospective parents should keep this in mind when naming their kids.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
