Asalamualaykum Question1-What does the name Layla mean, a Maulana saheb said that you shoudn’t keep the name Layla because it means black is he right?2-I heard that some Sahabiyat’s names were Layla so if its not a good name why didn’t Prophet Sallallahu alayhe wassallam change it?3-Did Prophet Sallallahu alayhe wassallam know the names of all (124 thousand ) sahabah’s?
Answer:
(Fatwa: 1398/1313=D/1429)
(1) Layla was the name of Sahbiayat (female Companions) and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not change it; it means that the name is correct and unchangeable. Night has many merits and good things and being dark is its good quality. Also, only literal meaning of names is not the cause of beauty, names are good by many other reasons as well.
(3) We do not know.
