Frightening a Muslim

I would like to enquire about the Hadith below:

“It is not halal for a Muslim to make other people surprised or shocked”

What is the source and is the Hadith authentic?

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The full narration is as follows:

‘Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Layla (rahimahullah) relates, “The Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) related that once they were on a journey with Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), when one Sahabi fell asleep. Someone took a rope that belonged to him causing this Sahabi to become anxious [when he awoke]. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said, ‘It is not permissible for a Muslim to frighten/scare another Muslim.’” [even if it is done in jest]

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4965. Refer: Sharh Ibn Raslan and Badhlul Majhud, Hadith: 5004 )

‘Allamah Munawi (rahimahullah) has quoted ‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) who has graded the Hadith sound (hasan) after referencing it to Musnad Ahmad and Tabarani.

(Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 9958)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
