Insulting a Person with the Name Muhammad

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Yesterday my love for the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam increased a lot. I have a brother who’s name is Muhammad. I was teasing him and saying you are a monkey then I said his name. Now I don’t know if I was joking with my little brother or insulting the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. I would never say it to to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Could this be a waswaas (whispered doubts of the devil)? I’ve repented in case I might have said it to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. When I think about it, it makes me cry. Will Allah forgive me?

A: You did not intend the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam). You should not be calling anyone a monkey. Repent for calling your brother a monkey and everything will be okay, Inshaa Allah Ta’aala.

You did not intend it towards the Prophet, so the rest is Waswaas.

Allah grant you peace of mind, Aameen.
