Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Shariah has emphasised on the rights of one’s mother, even if she is a non-Muslim. Consider the following:

Allah Ta’alaa says:

Translation: Thy Lord hath decreed, that ye worship none save Him, and (that ye show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not “Fie” unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word. (23) And lower unto them the wing of submission through mercy, and say: My Lord! Have mercy on them both as they did care for me when I was little. (24) (Surah Bani Israa’eel, verse 23-24)

Translation: And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents – His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years – Give thanks unto Me and unto thy parents. Unto Me is the journeying. (14) But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do – (15) (Surah Luqman, verse 14-15)

It is stated in a hadith:

Translation: a man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim)

See the following hadith:

Translation: “God has forbidden for you to be undutiful to your mothers.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

It comes in another narration that Jahimah consulted the Prophet Muhammad about taking part in a military campaign. The Prophet asked the man if his mother was still living. When told that she was alive, the Prophet said: “(Then) stay with her, for Paradise is at her feet.” (Nasaa’i) [1]

It is clear from the above that you should respect your mother and serve her. However, in doing so, you cannot violate the laws of Shariah.

It is not permissible to eat haram food or serve haram to anyone. We advise you to cook halal for your mother and serve her.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
