Testing on animals for medical research; Using products that have been tested on animals

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

1) Is testing on animals for medical research to help cure illnesses considered haraam in Islam?

2) Is it haraam to use products (such as cosmetics) that have been tested on animals?

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The answers to your queries are as follows[1]:

  1. Testing on animals for medical research to help cure illnesses is permissible provided there is a genuine need. Thus, it should be kept to the extent of the need, and all reasonable measures must be taken to avoid undue pain or ill-treatment of the animals.
  2. Using products tested on animals is permissible provided the product itself is halal.
