Do I have to inform the person I wronged about my actions?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaykum If you have wronged somebody in their past, do you have to tell them what you did or can you just ask for their forgiveness in general without naming what you did? For example, I have told lies which have hurt people’s feelings but by bringing it up again and telling the truth, it will make our relationship worse and bring back bad memories. It was not lies about someone else but lies about myself. Like when I was going through a sad time in my life, I said to someone I have not eaten (when I had eaten) to make them feel sorry for me and for attention. this must’ve hurt them to think I am not eating. This was a few years ago and I regret it deeply but bringing this up may cause upset or distrust and I want to make my relationship with them better. I feel terrible for giving them pain with my lies. Do I have to ask them for forgiveness (is it their right?) or only ask Allah for forgivness? I am unclear if hurting someone’s feelings by lieing is huqooqul ibaad or not? If I have to ask them forgivness must I specify what I did wrong or can I just say sorry for everything I have done wrong to you and please forgive me Please answer my question jazakallah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

To speak a lie is a major sin.

In the enquired situation, you spoke a lie about yourself. You should make istighfaar for speaking lies. You have not violated anyone’s rights therefore you do not have to seek their forgiveness.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
