Does verbally saying or writing out ‘di’ or ‘divo’ constitute a divorce?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Aslaamualaikum respected scholar

1)If a Muslim husband writes or even verbally says with the intention of divorce the first letter/s or verbally sounds out the first letter/s of the word divorce such as ‘d’, ‘di’. Does writing or saying such letters/sounds with intention of divorce break the nikaah? Although the full word ‘divorce’ is never written or said or verbally sounded out.

2) The same question as above but if a person writes or even verbally says with the intention of divorce the letters or verbally sounds out the first letter/s of the word divorce such as ‘div’, ‘divo’. Although the full word ‘divorce’ is never written or said or verbally sounded out. Does writing or saying such letters/sounds with intention of divorce break the nikaah?

Jazakallah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

No, the nikaah will not break.[1] However, you should refrain from making such statements.
