Starting a book on Wednesday

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Arij Canada

Assalamualaykum I wanted to know what is the reason of starting a book on Wednesday…. like any kitaab why do teachers usually start on a Wednesday if they are starting a new book? jzk

As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

There is mention in some books of a hadith that any task that is started or undertaken on a Wednesday, will come to completion. However, the Scholars of Hadith have debated as to whether this is a Hadith or not. Their discussion is mentioned in Al Maqasid ul Hasanah. All’amah Abdul Hai Lakhnawi (Rahimahullah) mentions that I searched for the original of this Hadith and I found the following narration. Jabir Radhiallah Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam made dua in Masjid Fatah for three consecutive days; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The dua of the Messenger Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was accepted on Wednesday between the Zuhar and Asr Salaah. Jabir Radhiallah Anhu further mentions, based on this whenever I experienced a difficulty, I would meticulously make dua during that time and my dua would be accepted. (Majmau’ Zawaid 4:12)

Based on this Hadith the Scholars have preferred to start classes on a Wednesday as dua’s are readily accepted.

Other than that there is mention in an authentic narration that Allah Ta’aala created light on Wednesday and knowledge is also light. Hence, one can take good omen that Allah Ta’aala will bring the books to completion once started like the light Allah Ta’aala created will be completed. (Zafrul Muhasileen pg 193, Fatawa Darul Uloom Zakariya 1:274)
