Performing acts of worship solely for the sake of Allah

Q: We were corrected by an Aalim recently that many times we do a deeni amal but only for the worldly benefit e.g. reading namaz so we can get barkat in rozi. Question: how should one combine the both intentions as many times an amal (e.g. ayatul kursi is recited for protection)is done solely for worldly benefit.

A: Performing Salaah is a prescribed act of worship which one carries out for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) has explained that one who performs Salaah on its fixed time in the prescribed manner (i.e. with jamaat in the Musjid), apart from the obligation being discharged and receiving reward, Allah Ta’ala will bless him with his divine protection and make his livelihood easy. Hence, we understand that the purpose of performing Salaah is not objectively for barkat in rozi, instead it is for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. However, among the additional benefits one will receive is barkat in rozi. Similar is the case of reciting Aayatul Kursi. Another example could be that a person purchases a cow for the milk the additional benefit that he receives is the dung. The pleasure of Allah Ta’ala is the greatest thing. Nothing can be compared with the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
