Workoverload

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I would like to ask: my job is connected with high responsibility. Although I learned and studied for many years, have diplomas and the required qualifications I am afraid to make a mistake or not to be able to cope and end up unwillingly harming or causing a problem to a customer. In addition I often encounter customers who are difficult to handle in general due to their condition, circumstances or type of personality.

They some times produce false complaints and accusations against me and my colleagues. The pressure makes the relations between the colleagues deteriorate as well. Please advise me a dua or a Sunna way to cope with such difficulties. Please pray for me to remain free of shortcomings in my ibadah and my job.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Man with all his qualifications and skills is still prone to err. A human being is never insulated against error. It is at the backdoor of this mindset that we approach our work. While we adopt everything possible to produce excellent results in our work, we focus on the guidance and help from Allāh as everything is ultimately in the control of Allāh . Our strength, being saved from deception and lies etc. all of that is in the hands of Allāh .

You may perform Salatul-Istikharah and Salatul-Hajah. This coupled with seeking advice from those who understand your situation etc. may open up your heart for guidance in your decision. You may also read the following Du’aa:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَمِّ وَالحَزَنِ، وَالعَجْزِ وَالكَسَلِ، وَالبُخْلِ، وَالجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ[i]

“Oh Allāh, I seek refuge with you from anxiety and sadness, from incompetence and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and the oppression of people.”
