It is in the book Shami: والأصح ما روی عن أبی حنیفۃ أنہ قال: أکرہ أن یقوم بین الساریتین. This indicates that it is makrooh (undesirable) to stand for salah between two pillars. Also, there are some traditions which say that the Sahaba (رضی اللہ عنھم) used to avoid standing between two pillars in salah. (کما فی اعلاء السنن 4/237، ط پاکستان) So, it was known that it is makrooh (undesirable) to stand for salah between two pillars without any need. Yes, it is allowable when there are some people (more than one) who can stand there:

والاصطفاف بین الأسطوانتین غیر مکروہ لأنہ صف فی حق کل فریق وان لم یکن طویلا و تخلل الأسطوانۃ بین الصف کتخلل متاع موضوع أو کفرجۃ بین رجلین و ذلک لایمنع صحۃ الاقتداء ولایوجب الکراھۃ (المبسوط للسرخسی: 2/35، ط مصر)
