Question:
I went for Hajj and was able to perform all the rituals except the Farewell Tawaaf, I returned home to Trinidad without offering any “damm”. Can I give that “damm” here in Trinidad? Or can charity be given instead?
Answer:
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The Farewell Tawaaf is from amongst the Wajib actions in Hajj[1]. The Holy Prophet Peace be upon Him said:
لا ينفرن أحدكم حتى يكون آخر عهده بالبيت رواه الامام مسلم
“No one should leave until the last thing that he does is the Farewell Tawaaf around the Ka’bah”
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
أمر الناس أن يكون آخر عهدهم بالبيت إلا أنه خفف عن المرأة الحائض رواه الامام البخاري
“The people were ordered to perform the Farewell Tawaaf around the Ka’bah as the last thing before leaving Makkah, except the menstruating women who were excused.”
Therefore by leaving out the Farewell Tawaaf it will become obligatory upon you to give a “damm” which will serve as an atonement.[2]
This damm can either be a sheep, goat, cow or one seventh of it or a camel or one seventh of it.
This animal must be sacrificed within the boundaries of the Haram at any time and is not restricted to the days of Hajj[3]. The worth of the animal given in charity will not suffice.
You should make arrangements to ensure that the damm is given. There are Islamic Originations in Saudi Arabia that provide such services.
NB- In the case of a woman who left out the Farewell Tawaaf because of menstruation or post natal bleeding then there is no damm [4] as mentioned in the above Hadith.

ولا يجزئ دم الفدية إلا في الحرم كدم الإحصار، ودم المتعة، والقران.
وأما الصدقة والصوم: فإنهما يجزيان حيث شاء.
