Please advise me on the name Daneen?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulfiqh.com

I have a very big query in my mind related to my Daughter’s Name (Daneen Tahira). I made a search over different web sources on her birth and found out that Daneen is an Islamic name, with the Meaning of Princess, at every place.

I am feeling much doubts about its authenticity as this name has Ibraani (Hebrew) origin, and secondly its actual pronunciation. I have asked different religious personalities and they never objected on this name, and a very pious person suggested to add “Tahira” as to show humility and piousness, as Princess sounds like little pride.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is permissible to keep any name as long as it is not prohibited and is not a common name used by the followers of another religion.[i]

The Prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam said,

“Name your children with the names of the Prophets.  The most beloved of names is Abdullah and Abdur Rahmān.  The most honest of the names is Hārith and Hammām.  The worst of names is Harb and Murrah.”[ii] Harb means war and Murrah means bitter.

According to some websites, Daneen means a princess.  In the Arabic language, Daneen means buzzing and humming.[iii]

The name Daneen does have a Hebrew origin.[iv] In Hebrew it refers to ‘God is my judge’.[v]

In conclusion, it is permissible to name one’s child with Daneen (with a dāl).

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
