my questions are woth regards to quran.
1.if i dont recite quran everyday will i be sinful?
2.if i dont complete the quran even after many years will i be sinful?
3.what is the maximum time one can take to complete recitation of quran ?
4.what if my whole life passes and i dont know what quran means i just recite arabic will i be sinful?
5.is it compulsory to understand quran or its just meant for simply reading?
6. i think theres a hadis which says quran must aleast be completed twice a year ..does it means only reading or understanding?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Quran is the word of Allah and is preserved exactly as it was revealed. The Quran is a great blessing upon us and a means of gaining closeness to Allah by reciting the Quran and understanding the Quran.
To recite the Quran and understand the Quran is clearly ordained in Quran. Allah Ta’ala says:
وَأَنْ أَتْلُوَ الْقُرْآنَ فَمَنِ اهْتَدَى فَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِي لِنَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ ضَلَّ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُنْذِرِينَ (92)
Translation: And (I have been commanded) to recite the Quran (unto mankind). Whoever is rightly guided, is guided for his own benefit (because a person’s obedience to Allah does not benefit Allah, but benefits the person). As for those who go astray, say (to them), “I am only from those who warn (I have fulfilled my duty to convey the message of Islam to you and I cannot force you to accept Imaan, I have completed my duty).”(Surah Naml verse: 92)
To leave out the Quran is indeed a great deprivation and a cause for punishment. The Quran will lay a charge against the person who left out the Quran and did not pay attention to the Quran by reciting the Quran and understanding the Quran, Allah says:
وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا(سورة الفرقان) (30)
(30) And the Noble Messenger submitted, “O my Lord – indeed my people took this Qur’an as worthy of being abandoned.”(Surah Furqan Verse: 30)
One should endeavor to learn to recite the Quran as much as possible. The recitation of the Quran yields great rewards for the reciter. Consider the following Ahadith.
حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ أَبُو خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَالأُتْرُجَّةِ طَعْمُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَرِيحُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَالَّذِي لاَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَالتَّمْرَةِ طَعْمُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَلاَ رِيحَ لَهَا، وَمَثَلُ الْفَاجِرِ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَمَثَلِ الرَّيْحَانَةِ رِيحُهَا طَيِّبٌ وَطَعْمُهَا مُرٌّ، وَمَثَلُ الْفَاجِرِ الَّذِي لاَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كَمَثَلِ الْحَنْظَلَةِ طَعْمُهَا مُرٌّ وَلاَ رِيحَ لَهَا ”(بخاري(
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The example of him (a believer) who recites the Qur’an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur’an is like the Raihna (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Qur’an is like the colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell. (Bukhari)
و أخرج مسلم من حديث أبي أمامة : اقرؤوا القرآن فانه يأتي يوم القيامة شفيعا لأصحابه
Imam Muslims (Rahmatullahi Alayhi) narrates on the authority of Abu Umamah that Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said “Recite the Qur’an for it will come as an intercessor for its reciter’s on the Day of Judgment.” (Muslim, Vol.1, Pg.553, Baihaqi, Vol.2, Pg.395
The sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) used to recite the entire Quran in 7 days, one manzil every day.
Hereunder is the details of each manzil:
First manzil= surah Baqarah to surah Nisaa.
Second manzil= Surah Maaidah to Surah Tawbah.
Third Manzil =Surah Yunus to Surah Nahl.
Fourth Manzil =Surah Israaeel to Furqaan.
Fifth Manzil =Surah Shu’araa to Surah Yaaseen.
Sixth Manzil= Surah Saaffaat to Surah Hujuraat.
Seventh Manzil =Surah Qaaf to Surah Naas. (1)
If one cannot recite the entire Quran only in seven days, he should try to complete the Quran once in 40 days.
The least a person recites is the entire Quran two times a year.
It is narrated about Imam Abu Hanifah (Rahimahullah) that he used to say “A person that has completed the Quran twice a year has fulfilled the rights of the Quran”. (2)
We also advise to obtain the Tafseer Ma’ariful Quran of Hazrat Mufti Shafi Saheb and read few pages every day to understand the message of the Quran.
May Allah Ta’ala keep us engaged with the Quran throughout our lives. Ameen.

(١) ويستحب ختم القرآن في كل أسبوع، قال النبيّ صلّ الله عليه وسلّم اقرأ القرآن في كل سبع ولا تزد.(إخرجه بخاري٤٧٦٧ ) (البرهان في علوم القرآن،دار الحديث/ ص٣١٦ )
حدَّثنا مسدَّدٌ، حدَّثنا قُرَّانُ بنُ تمام. وحدَثنا عبدُ الله بن سعيد، حدَّثنا أبو خالد – وهذا لفظه – عن عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن بن يعلى، عن عثمان بن عبد الله بن أوس عن جَدّه – قال عبدُ الله بن سعيد في حديثه: أوس بن حُذَيفة -، قال: قَدِمْنا على رسولِ الله – صلَّى الله عليه وسلم – في وفدِ ثقيفٍ، قال: فنزلت الأحلافُ على المغيرة بن شُعبة، وأنزلَ رسولُ الله – صلَّى الله عليه وسلم – بني مالك في قُبَّة له قال مُسدَّد: وكان في الوفدِ الذين قَدِمُوا على رسولِ الله – صلَّى الله عليه وسلم – من ثقيف – قال: كان كلَّ ليلة يأتينا بعد العشاء يُحدّثنا، قال أبو سعيد: قائماً على رجليه حتى يُراوِحَ بين رجليه من طول القيام، وأكثر ما يحدِّثنا ما لَقِيَ من قومه من قريش، ثم يقول: “لا سواء، كنَّا مستضعفينَ مستذلين – قال مُسدَّد: – بمكة، فلما خرجنا إلى المدينة كانت سجالُ الحربِ بيننا وبينهم، نُدال عليهم ويدالُون علينا” فلما كانت ليلةٌ أبطأ عن الوقت الذي كان يأتينا فيه، فقلنا: لقد أبطأتَ عنَّا الليلةَ، قال: “إنه طرأ علي جزئي من القرآن، فكَرِهْتُ أن أجيء حتى أتمَّه”. قال أوس: سألت أصحابَ رسول الله – صلَّى الله عليه وسلم – كيف يُحزبون القرآن؟ قالوا: ثلاثٌ، وخمسٌ، وسبعٌ، وتسعٌ، وإحدى عشرة، وثلاثَ عشرةَ، وحِزبُ المفصّل وحدَه (ابوداود/ دار الأسلامية العلمية/ ص ٣٠٨) ( ن إسناده ضعيف. عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن الطائفي ضعفه غير واحد، وقالوا: يكتب حديثه للاعتبار، وباقي رجاله ثقات.) وفي مسند احمد أيضا بالتصريح . ج٣١ ص٣٦٢).
وفي الأتقان في علوم القرآن: وممّا يدلّ علي أنّ ترتيبها توقيفي: ما أخرجه أحمد وأبوداود عن أوس بن أبي أوس حذيفة الثقفي قال: كنت في الوفد…..ألحديث..فسألنا أصحاب رسول الله صلّي الله عليه وسلّم، قلنا كيف تحزّبون القرآن؟ قالو: نحزّبه ثلاث سور، وخمس سور،وسبع سور،وتسع سور، وإحدى عشرة، وثلاث عشرة، وحزب المفصل من [ق] حتى نختم. قال: فهذا يدلّ علي أن ترتيب السور علي ما هو في المصحف الآن كان على عهد رسول الله صلّ الله عليه وسلّم.
(٢)الاولى ان يختم القرأن في كل اربعين يوما و قيل ينبعي ان يختمه في السنة مرتين روى عن ان ابي حنيفة انه قال من قرأ القرأن في السنة مرتين فقد قضى حقه وقيل اذا اراد ان يقضى حقه فليختم في كل اسبوع وقيل في كل شهر مرة وبه افتى ابو عصمة (غنية المتملّي حلبي الكبيرمكتبه رشيديه٤٩٦)
