How to Deal with Blasphemous Thoughts?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I am overwhelmed by blasphemous thoughts daily. I don’t know how to get rid of them. They make me anxious 24/7, and I have lost my appetite. Before I tell you what are, could you help me or not? I don’t want to lose my faith, and I’m afraid I might have left the fold of Islam without knowing. I don’t want to die in this state. Why do I get these blasphemous thoughts anyways?

Answer

Thank you for your question. The inability to control your thoughts is truly a hardship, and I pray that Allah Most High guides you out of this and brings you back to good health.

Also, remember that your anxiety at having these thoughts and detesting them is a sign of evident faith. Don’t despair in the mercy of Allah Most High that He can remove them from you. I assure you: you are capable of getting rid of them.

Some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) came to him and said, ‘We find in ourselves thoughts that are too terrible to speak of.’ He said, ‘Are you having such thoughts?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘That is a clear sign of faith.’” [Muslim]
