The money that your friend gave you is a gift for you and if he doesn’t like to take it back then that money is halal for you. To use that money is completely permissible for you. You don’t have to do anything extra. However, there should be reciprocation in friendship such that if someone does something for you then you should do the same in return. This is the sunnah.
