Missing the Sunna of Fajr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Assalam aleykum,
If a group prays the fajr prayer and they forgot to pray the 2 sunnah before, but there is still time left, then what should they do? Should they redo the 2 sunnah of fajr and then redo the fajr prayer? Or should they pray the 2 sunnah of fajr as qada later in the day?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

According to the Hanafi school, you would not make up the missed sunna prayer after the obligatory Fajr prayer either before or after the time has exited. [Ibn `Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

You would only make up the pre-Fajr sunna prayer if: [a] it was missed with the obligatory prayer and [b] you were making it up in the same morning before noon (zawal). [ibid.]

And Allah alone gives success.
