Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Person A steals somebody’s book and now wants to return it. However, the book is specific to a particular time period, such as ‘Software 2000’, and is no longer useful or beneficial to the original person, since it is out of date. Does person A:
a) Return the book and do nothing else
b) Return the book and pay money for the amount of the book.
c) Pay money for the amount of the book.
d) Do nothing

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

They have to return the book. If the owner is not satisfied, then they should be compensated. (So (a) first, and then (b).)

Wassalam,

Faraz.
