Haram: Dreadlocks?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it haram for a sister to have dreadlocks? Or a brother? Please provide specific details.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, and all blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, his Folk, Companions and those who follow their noble way,

If it is not in imitation of unbelievers, it would be permitted for a sister to keep dreadlocks, and she would not have to undo them for wudu. If it is in imitation of unbelievers, this would be impermissible.

For a brother, this is problematic insofar as there is no Prophetic dispensation, so every time he needs (or wants) to do ghusl, he would have to undo the braids such that the water reaches through them to ALL the hair.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
