Question:
I was sacrificing my goat on the day of ‘EĪd and forgot to recite the name of Allāh upon the animal due to excitement. Is the animal halāl (legitimate to consume)?
Answer:
According to Islamic principles of theology and jurisprudence, in the above-mentioned case, the animal is considered Halāl and legitimate to consume.
‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) stated regarding an individual who forgets to recite the name of Allāh when slaughtering an animal, “Every believer holds the name of Allāh in his heart, even if he/ she forgot to recite it upon the animal being slaughtered.” (Fath al-Bārī)
However, if one intentionally abstained from taking the name of Allāh upon the animal for one reason or another, it will be considered as impermissible to consume.
The verse in the Qur’ān, “Do not consume any such portion of an animal upon which Allāh’s name has not been recited, for undoubtedly it is an abomination (major sin).” (Qur’an, 6: 122) is an emphatic negation from consuming an animal upon which the name of Allāh had been deliberately omitted.
