A Hadith regarding a woman fasting without her husband’s consent

Is this narration authentic?

أيما امرأة صامت بغير إذن زوجها فأرادها على شيء فامتنعت عليه كتب الله عليها ثلاثا من الكبائر

Any woman who fasts [optional fasts] without her husband’s consent, and he wishes to fulfill his desires with her but she refuses [as she is keeping an optional fast], Allah Ta’ala will record three major sins for her.

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (rahimahullah).

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 23)

However, ‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared the text unreliable (fihi nakarah).

(Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 132)

The narration in question is therefore not suitable to quote.

There are authentic Hadiths which state that a woman should seek her husband’s permission before observing optional fasts, without the mention of three major sins being recorded for her. These should be quoted instead.

(Refer: Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 131/132)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
