Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, mufti saheeb!
People are whistling:
a) in sports, when a whistle is used at the start of runners;
b) in everyday life, children whistle to each other and play like that;
c) in emergency cases, when people get lost in the forest, and they can find each other through whistling;
d) sometimes people sing through whistling.
This applies to the action of whistling with your fingers, also with the help of a whistle that makes a whistle.
What is hukm (ruling) to whistling? Is it permissible to whistle in Islam?
Answer
Wa ʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhī Wa Barakātuh
In principle, whistling is merely a sound emitted from the mouth; hence it is permissible.
However, when used for singing and other musical or unlawful purposes, it will be rendered impermissible.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
