Question

Is it permissible to perform tayammum, even when one has easy access to safe water?

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Answer

Before I answer the question I will mention in which situations Tayammum is permissible.

Tayammum is permissible in the following situations:

  1. Someone is a traveler or outside the city and does not have access to water within a mile or more.
  2. One is ill and the use of water is injurious to one’s health or it will increase the illness.
  3. One on whom ghusl (ritual bath) has become compulsory fears that the coldness of the water will kill him or make him ill.
  4. It is also permissible for that person who fears that if he was to perform wudhu then the Janaza or Eid salah will be missed.

When one does not find water he should delay praying the Salah until its end time in the hope of finding water and if he does find water then he will do wudhu and if not he will do tayammum. (Mukhtasar Qudoori p.9 & p.10)

With regards to your question if one has access to water and the use of it is not harmful to one’s health then Tayammum is not permissible.
