Question

Is making mobile games halal or haram in Islam?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Allah mentions in The Holy Quran: ‘And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead (others) from the way of Allah without the knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.’ [1]

According to the teachings of Islam, the permissibility and impermissibility of games would depend on the nature and type of game it is. So, here we can divide them into two groups:

  1. If the content of the game is such a nature that it goes against the teachings of Islamic principles, then such games will be impermissible.
  2. If the content of the game is such a nature that it does not go against the teachings of Islamic principles, then such games will be permissible.

However, there should be no form of gambling and interest involved in the games as this will not be permissible according to the overwhelming majority of scholars.[2]

Therefore, it will be permissible to make mobile games as long as they do not contain any feature which may deem them impermissible.

Only Allah knows best
