What is the meaning of the word “MOLA” used before the name of Hazrat Ali (RA)?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
assalam o alaekum if the shia people , uses the word MOLA , before the name of hazrat Ali (R.A.T.A) i.e MOLA ALI , can we say that they are saying hazrat ALi is God (nauzubillah) and we can decide that they are kafir. and what about the people who ask for help from others as well as from Allah e.g ya rusool Allah madad, ya Ali madad and alike? are they committing shirk ? and are they still muslims?

Answer

(Fatwa: 521/507=D)

(1) The word ?Mola? has various meanings: lord, owner, friend, neighbour, lover, son-in-law etc. The Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) has used the word ?Mola? for Hazrat Ali (Raziallahu Anhu) which means friend: من کنت مولاہ فعلی مولاہ. If the Shia use the word ?Mola? for Hazrat Ali considering him as lord or god then this is polytheism. Such Shias are out of folk of Islam. For details, please see: Shieat awr Imam Khumaini

(2)  The Quran says: ایاک نعبد و ایاک نستعین (Thee do we worship and Thy aid we seek) Therefore, saying ya rusool Allah madad or ya Ali madad with the intention of seeking help is an act of shirk (polytheism). Many people speak ignorantly such words out of love; they should be informed and directed to right path.
