Closet Nudism

Question:

Assalam Walekum, My name is Ayesha and I am a new muslim convert. Ayesha is not my real name but I will be using this name on islamic websites and forums, etc. I wanted to ask you a question about an old habit of mine (before I converted) which was to stay naked or nude when I am alone in my room or my house ensuring that nobody would see me. I also lock my door at night and sleep naked. It is called closet nudism, I have never done public nudism neither have I ever thought about it but I enjoy the comfort of nudity when I am alone. I would like to know if I can continue this habit, if it is permissible in Islam or not? Thank you.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Islam encourages modesty and we commend you for your stance on that.

Nabi ﷺ has mentioned in a Hadith:

«الْحَيَاءُ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَّا بِخَيْرٍ»

“Modesty brings nothing but good”

(Bukhari, Muslim; Riyadhus-Saliheen – Pg. 375 – Zam-Zam)

Keeping in mind the above Hadith, it is undesirable to remain in the state of nudity even though you’re in seclusion. [1]
