Is having a beard compulsory in Islam, or is it a sunnah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I am the student of engg., I want to know that is having a beard strictly compulsory in Islam or it is a sunnah.I have come to know that beard should be atleast be covered by the fist of one’s hand. Please tell me that beard with smaller length than the fist is similar to the clean shaven beard of the person.I always remain in a discouraged spirit to have the beard on the land of darul harb as we muslim students are so much dependent on the nonmuslims for our future careers & education. As it is getting very difficult to follow the rule of beard in this environment due to communal hatreds. So, please sir help me on this.

(Fatwa: 304/306=L)

It is wajib for men to grow beard, keeping beard to one fist is sunnah-e-muakkadah while trimming it below one fist is makrooh-e-tahreemi; therefore shaving beard or trimming it below one fist for job and other reasons is unlawful. As far as the matter of rizq (livelihood) is concerned one should rely only on Allah, he is alone the Provider of Livelihood, one should spend ones life according to His commandments and the beautiful way of the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم).

Allah says: وکأین من دابۃ لا تحمل رزقھا اللہ یرزقھا و ایاکم (الآیۃ)

“How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (Both) them and you: for He hears and knows (All things).” (29/60)

Also, He says: ومن یتق اللہ یجعل لہ مخرجاً الخ

Whosoever fears All?h and keeps his duty to him, He will make a Way for Him to get out (from Every difficulty). And He will provide Him from (sources) He never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust In All?h, Then He will suffice Him.

Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) knows Best
