Should one recite Surah Fatiha when praying behind an Imam, or should one listen to the Imam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Salaam Alikum, From last two years I recite Surah Fathiha, even I am praying behind IMAM. Is this true practice. I heard when IMAM read one should listen, If IMAM don’t one should recite SURAH Fatiha. Please guide me. Sukran, Zazakallah-ho-Khairaa. ALLAH Haifz

Answer

(Fatwa: 1201/1201/M=1431)

Your practice is not right. Qirat is forbidden behind the Imam altogether. As well as do not recite Surah Fatiha may it be loud or silent salah. Keep silent behind the Imam. The majority of Sahaba such as Hadhrat Ali (رضى الله عنه) and Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Masood (رضى الله عنه) etc forbade the muqtadis from Qirat behind Imam.
