Reliance on Halaal Certifying Body

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I would like to get some clarification on a subject which frequently arises in our household and that is regarding Halaal certification by the various organisations that we have in South Africa. I am of the view that so long as a product is certified halaal provided it does not have gelatine as an ingredient then I would consume it, however other members of our household feel that the only certifcation body that is acceptable is SANHA. It is not my intention to cause rifts between the learned Ulama of our country but merely to understand what is the correct view and why.

A: This is an issue of trust and reliance in an organization. If they only trust and rely on SANHA then it is entirely their choice. If you have that reliance on other organizations as well, then you are at liberty to follow others too.
