Umrah Questions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: 1. Can I be a Marham for my mother in law for umrah?
2. Which is more virtuos, to perform multiple umrahs  or doing more tawaaf?
3. Can I carry a backpack on my back while in Ihram?
4. In Makkah can a lady read namaaz with the haram jamaat but from the hotel room?
5. Can a lady make tawaaf  without  her husband or Marham?

A: 1. A son-in-law is a mahram for his mother-in-law. One may travel with the mother-in-law on condition that there is no fear of fitna, especially when the mother-in-law is relatively young. As such, the son-in-law should exercise precaution.
2. It is more virtuous to perform more tawāfs than performing more nafl ‘umrahs[1]. However, this does not mean that one should completely negate performing nafl ‘umrah.
3. Yes.
4. No, she cannot join the salāh of the Haram from her hotel room.
5. It is advisable that a woman be accompanied by a mahram during tawāf. However, if she performs tawāf by herself, it will be valid.
