Position of Urs

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I would like to know more about ‘Urs Sharief’ programs that certain people attend. What are they? Should they be seen as acceptable in Islam?

A: Urs is a ‘ceremony’ that people do at the grave of a pious person or at some other place. This is not substantiated in the Sunnah, so must be avoided. A lot of forbidden practices take place in an Urs that makes it even worse. Urs was not practiced in the era of the Sahaabah Radhiyallaahu Anhum, nor in the era of the Taabi’een. If there was any virtue and substantiation for this act, they would have practiced upon it.
