Duas to be recited in pregnancy

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

What would you recommend a husband and wife should pray during pregnancy? Any particular Surahs from the Quran or particular Duas? Is there anything else you would advise?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

When a woman receives news of her confirmed pregnancy, she should praise and glorify Allah for this great bounty.

A pregnant woman carrying a child in her womb and overcoming all the challenges that come with the pregnancy, nausea, hormonal imbalances, mood swings, diet imbalances etc, are all acts of Ibaadah throughout her term of pregnancy. She should make dua to Allah to assist her in her pregnancy and childbirth and upbringing of the child.

A woman in pregnancy should be mindful of her Salaah. She should also increase her recitation of the Qur’aan and dhikr of Allah.

She should be mindful of eating only halaal and abstain from doubtful food.

A woman in pregnancy is in a state of Ibaadah. She should stay away from all sins and sinful places.

She should make the following duas as much as possible: [1]

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Translation: O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (child)!

(Sūrah Al-Sāffāat, Aayah 100)

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Translation: My Lord, grant me from yourself a good offspring. Indeed, you are the Hearer of supplication.

(Sūrah Āl-Imrāan, Aayah 38)

Translation: Oh our Rabb! Grant us the coolness (comfort) of our eyes (grant us pleasure and satisfaction) from our spouses and children (so that they never become a source of regret or distress for us in either world when they follow Islam properly), and make us Imaams (guides) of the pious (make our progeny pious and make us pious enough to guide pious people.)

(Sūrah Al- Furqaan, Aayah 74)

Translation: Our Lord! Make us both submissive to you and (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to you, and show us our ways of devotion and turn to us (mercifully), surely you are the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

(Sūrah Al-Baqarah, Aayah 128)

It is advised for a woman in pregnancy to also give some sadaqah if she has the means to do so.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
