Is it Permissible to Read Novels

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

Assalamua’laikum, in some novels the character dies and his soul gets transferred to another body in another world or another timeline. The novels don’t focus on this. So, is it permissible to read such novels or will it be sinful?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Literature which contains vulgarity promotes immorality or glorifies that which Allah has forbidden should not be read.

A book is an influential companion. The hadeeth very strongly condemns bad company. Hence, books that we read should guide us to righteousness.

Allah’s Messenger () said, “The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith’s bellows (or furnace); from the first, you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.”[1]
