‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) on the importance of practising upon the Quran together with reciting it

Question

Please mention a reference for this narration as well as the Arabic text:

Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Do not be fooled by someone who [only] recites the Quran [without practicing], for it is merely his verbal utterance. Rather look [with envy] at the one who acts upon it [together with reciting it].”

 

Answer

Hafiz Khatib Baghdadi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration of Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibnul Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Arabic text

قال عمر بن الخطاب: لا يغرنكم من قرأ القرآن، إنما هو كلام يتكلم به، ولكن انظروا من يعمل به

 

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
