Hadith on the distance of the sun on the day of Qiyamah

Kindly verify the following narration:

‘On the Day of Qiyamah, the sun will be above our heads one arms length, one mile length and one surmah (antimony/collyrium) stick length’

Answer

The narration is authentic and is as follows:

Sayyiduna Miqdad ibnul Aswad (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

On the Day of Qiyamah, the sun would draw so close to the people that there would be left only a distance of one mile.

Sulaym ibn ‘Amir (rahimahullah) – one of the narrators of this Hadith- said:

By Allah, I do not know whether he meant by ‘mile’, the distance of one mile, or the stick used for applying collyrium (surmah/kuhl) to the eye.

The Hadith goes on:

The people would be submerged in perspiration according to their deeds, some up to their ankles, some up to their knees, some up to the waist and some the perspiration would have bridled him.

While saying this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) pointed towards his mouth.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 7135)
