I have a lot of doubts and misgivings (waswasa) regarding my wudu. I have made many unsuccessful attempts to get rid of these doubts. How do I know with certainty that my wudu has been invalidated?
Knowledge is the best way to keep away doubts and misgivings. You should know, then, that certainty is not removed by doubt. If you have made wudu and then doubt whether or not your wudu has been invalidated, you are still on wudu because you are certain that you were on wudu and we do not override this ruling because of the doubt [h: that you invalidated it]. The same applies for the opposite case: if you have invalidated your wudu and you then doubt whether or not you have made wudu, then you are considered not to be on wudu, since that is what you are certain of. If someone who has made wudu senses some stirring in the abdomen, for example, and is not certain if something [h: e.g. wind] has exited from him, then his [h: or her] wudu is not invalidated. This is the general principle that you are asking about. If you don’t completely understand what invalidates wudu, you should inquire further about it.
