Is family planning allowed in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Is family planning allowed in Islam? If yes, to what extent? and what may be the permissible ways and course of action in this regard?
There are two different ways of doing family planning for one’s family. One is that a person stops either medically or some other way the birth of kids. For example, some people stop at two or three kids this is not permissible in the eyes of the scholars. Second, is to increase the gap between each Kid temporarily. This is allowed irrespective of what methods are acquired, whether internally or externally.

However, if the doctors have suggested that this woman would not be able to conceive any more kids then in that case, a person can do his family planning by stopping the birth of kids.
