Isha Namaz Five Rakat mistakenly by Imam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamo Alaykum Honorable Mufti saheb:

If Imam performs five Rakats of Isha by mistake and did not realize it but after Tasleem Muqtadi informs that imam perfomed five rakats, does the Namaz have to be repeated?

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

Regarding your question, it is necessary to repeat this prayer. But if the Imam is convinced that he has certainly prayed four rak’ahs, then the Imam’s statement will be considered trustworthy and there will be no need to repeat that prayer.
