Who Must Pay for the Walima?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org
Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Who must pay for the walimah? Is there a ruling that says that the husband (groom) should pay for the walimah feast or can it be paid by anyone?

Answer

Assalamu alaykum,

Thank you for your question. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did encourage his companions to hold a walima after marriage and he did hold a walima after his own marriages. This sunna event is asked of the groom to finance as the default, but it is a charitable act for anyone to pay for it, in his stead. Please see the details below.
