Government employment and the unlawful

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it permissible to take employment in the service of a government representing a non-Moslem population? Specifically, I ask as regards civil service and diplomacy when it is possible to be asked to work on projects dealing with the forbidden, and is it justified to simply refuse the order and continue working?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

In general, it is permitted to work for the civil service and in other government posts. If there is possibility of something being haram, one should consult with reliable scholars about how to proceed while striving to uphold balanced scrupulousness. When something is clearly haram, then one must (clearly) avoid it.

And Allah alone gives success.
