Mistakenly making a badd dua

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I need to know what is the ruling on mistakenly making bad-dua. During dua, one accidently wishes for hell instead of heaven or speaking something related to shirk or something of that nature especially when one is suffering from waswasa.

Bismillaah

A: Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has taught us in the mubaarak Hadith that we always ask Allah Ta’ala for ease and that we do not ask for difficulty. Hence, asking Allah Ta’ala to send one to Jahanam is not permissible. Similarly it is not permissible for one to ask for something impermissible or what involves shirk etc,. If one had mistakenly made such a dua, one should make tawba and in future exercise caution and refrain from making such duas.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
