Is it permissible to use black hair dye?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulihsan.com

Q: Is it permissible to use black hair dye?

A:It is recommended to the dye the hair (For men and women) with henna and other colours provided the ingredients are Halaal, besides pure black dye, as long as it is not imitation of the Kuffaar and the flagrant sinners. Black mixed with other colours maybe used. Pure black is Makrooh according to most Ulama especially if it is used as adornment or as a deception of age.

In one Hadith narrated by Hazrat Abdullah ibnu Abbas (Radiyallahu Anhuma), Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “There will be people who will come later (in my Ummah) and apply black dye. They will not even smell the fragrance of Jannah. (Sunan Abi Dawood #4212)

It appears in another Hadith that the father of Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhuma),  Hazrat Abu Quhaafah (Radiyallahu Anhu) was brought before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had seen his head and beard completely white.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) advised him to dye his hair as well as his beard, however Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) instructed him to abstain from using black dye. (Sahih Muslim 2/199)
