Does paying one’s wife’s accounts count as mahr?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: When my husband married me 25 years ago, he didn’t give me any mahr. He always says that his way of giving mehr was by paying for my accounts, which amounted to R4500.00 at that time. Can that be regarded as mahr for me?

Bismillaah

A: If this arrangement was with your consent then it can be counted as mahr.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
